Amira – Amulette

World Village / Harmonia Mundi

(Pieter Franssen)

Amira Medunjanin has come a long way in seven years. Her widely acclaimed debut album Rosa, released on Snail Records in 2004, introduced us to a young Sarajevo-born singer with an exquisite voice capable of conveying the beauty, sadness and soulful longing of Bosnian sevdah – a style of singing that shares an emotional yearning with the Portuguese saudade of fado and the blues of Cape Verde. Since her debut recording with Mostar Sevdah Reunion, Amira has worked with a variety of musicians, continually seeking to push the boundaries of Bosnian sevdah to find new means of expression. As well as a live album recorded at the Sarajevo Jazz Festival in 2008, her more experimental leanings led to a collaboration with Bosnian-born accordionist Merima Ključo taking traditional Bosnian sevdalinke, Macedonian and Serbian songs and re-imagining them in a contemporary context. Released on World Village in 2010, Zumra was a brave and bold musical statement that explored the worlds of Balkan folk, jazz and contemporary music in compelling fashion.

A year down the line and it feels that Amira’s musical vision has finally come to fruition in this remarkable partnership with Belgrade-born, Paris-based jazz pianist Bojan Z on her fourth album Amulette, released this week on World Village. The opening bars of Bele Ruže (White Roses) reveal the soft, sultry tones of Amira’s voice enveloped in the warmth of Nenad Vasilić’s double bass playing. As the album progresses, the talents of the hand-picked musicians are telling: Kim Burton’s guest accordion, Lebanese percussionist Bachar Khalife and Bojan Z hit it off on the traditional Serbian song Zemi Me Zemi; the intricate fretwork of guest guitarist Vlatko Stefanovski complements Bojan Z’s keyboard musings on the beautiful Macedonian song Prošeta Se Jovka Kumanovka, while Amira and Bojan Z share a musical intimacy and understanding on the traditional Bosnian sevdalinka Kafu Mi Draga Ispeci.

Elsewhere, Grana Od Bora finds Bojan Z under the lid and wringing out the percussive qualities of the piano as Amira’s voice floats over the top. Bojan Z’s arrangement of Omer Beže reflects the comic conversation between two lovers with spirited performances from both Bojan and Khalife and contrasts nicely with the disturbing setting of the Bosnian wedding song Kad Puhnuše Sabahzorski Vjetrovi whose interpretation is left to the imaginations of the audience and the musicians.

There’s plenty to love here – the songs, inventive arrangements, warm production and the interaction of a group of hugely talented musicians who share in a musical vision untempered by genre – but it’s Amira and Bojan Z’s musical partnership that nails it for me. Let’s hope we see more of them in the UK soon.

The Bosnian singer sets folk songs from Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo in classic jazz

Hard on the heels of the Bosnian singer’s first album, Zumra, comes this follow-up. Happily, she rejects Balkanisation, setting folk songs from Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo as well as Bosnia in instrumentation that would suit the classic jazz songbook.

Bojan Zulfikarpasic’s piano and Nenad Vasilic’s double bass leave enough space for Amira’s singing to steep itself in melancholy.

Amira: Amulette – review

Amira Medunjanin – better known by her stage name Amira – is one of Europe’s finest and most soulful singers. Born in Sarajevo, she is one of the greatest exponents of Bosnian sevdah, a mostly slow, sad and passionate style that is the Balkan answer to the blues or Cape Verdean morna; no surprise then that she has already been compared to Billie Holiday and Cesaria Evora. This new set certainly proves she has the potential to become a global success, and also that she is willing to experiment. In the past, she has been backed by a band, the Mostar Sevdah Reunion, and by accordion, but here she is joined by a jazz trio, led by pianist Bojan Z. The songs are all traditional, mostly from Bosnia but also from Macedonia and Kosovo, and most are sad-edged love ballads, with just one stomping comic piece added in. Bojan often sounds desperate to break away to show off his rapid-fire jazz work, and there are adventurous sections where the piano and guitar solos contrast strongly with the vocals, or where echoing effects are added in. But Amira’s exquisite, clear and pained singing holds the set together.
